The love for athletics starts young in San Diego with youth teams for toddlers up to teenagers. Pee wee football is one of the most popular extracurricular activities for youngsters who live in the area, followed by baseball, soccer, lacrosse, cheerleading, and even hockey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to private leagues, the high schools and middle schools also offer sports to their students. Those teams can prepare dedicated athletes to play for one of the colleges or universities in the city, like <a href=\"https:\/\/sdcityknights.com\/landing\/index\">San Diego City College<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/usdtoreros.com\/\">University of San Diego<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>San Diego FC, a new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiego.com\/sports\/pro-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">San Diego pro sports<\/a>&nbsp;team,&nbsp;will join MLS in 2025, bringing new excitement to the league. &nbsp;Get ready to follow an exciting journey as San Diego FC to begin play in MLS in 2025 prepares for its debut season.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"sdsu-basketball\" height=\"447\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.simpleviewinc.com\/simpleview\/image\/upload\/c_fill,h_447,q_75,w_832\/v1\/clients\/welkdigital\/sdsu_basketball_1eb94b0b-33f9-43aa-9c6f-2d69f6dfff27.jpg\" width=\"832\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Image by&nbsp;Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to Find the Right Team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding the right team to play for really depends on where it is located, skill level, and the athlete\u2019s ultimate goal. For really small children, finding a recreational team is fairly easy. Parents can just go online or over to their local park, sign up for their child\u2019s choice of sport, pay a fee, and that\u2019s about it. For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdaztecs.org\/\">San Diego Youth Aztecs<\/a>, football and cheerleading programs, are in Chula Vista and often practice at Montgomery-Waller Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As they grow older and sports become more competitive, it is a little more difficult. The Right to Dream Academy&nbsp;has an MLS Next program for gifted players who would like to go pro one day. To get on the team, a player will have to try out. Opening in summer 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the high school level, where a student plays will likely depend on where they live unless they are involved with a club team outside of school. At the college level, including for <a href=\"https:\/\/goaztecs.com\/\">San Diego State University<\/a>, where someone plays will depend on whether they were recruited or if they are able to become part of a team as a walk-on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.simpleviewinc.com\/simpleview\/image\/upload\/c_fill,h_600,q_75,w_1200\/v1\/clients\/welkdigital\/Baseball_ec2091cc-dbe0-4a69-9456-1b921356d18f.jpg\" alt=\"San Diego baseball game\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Image by&nbsp;Dmytro Aksonov<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sports Facilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are multiple full-service sports complexes in San Diego that have facilities for many different sports. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiego.gov\/park-and-recreation\/centers\/recctr\/willhenderson\">Willie Henderson Sports Complex<\/a> has one baseball field, one youth ball field, three multi-purpose soccer and football fields, two softball fields, and much more. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socalsportscomplex.com\/\">SoCal Sports Complex<\/a> is a massive complex that often hosts soccer tournaments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For athletes who are involved in BMX racing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usabmx.com\/tracks\/0245\">San Diego BMX<\/a> has one of the top tracks in the region. The city also has golf courses, rowing facilities, multiple cheerleading training facilities and much more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Professional Teams<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>America\u2019s Finest City has one major men\u2019s professional team, MLB\u2019s San Diego <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiego.com\/sports\/pro-teams\/padres-baseball\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Padres<\/a>. The city also boasts many other professional sports teams across several other sports, both at the highest level for that particular genre and minor league teams. For instance, the National Women\u2019s Soccer League\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiego.com\/blog\/post\/san-diego-wave-schedule-tickets-and-gametimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">San Diego Wave FC<\/a> and Major League Rugby San Diego Legion are both professional teams in the area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>San Diego\u2019s beautiful weather makes it a terrific place to play sports all year.
