There’s nothing quite like going to a ballgame, cheering for your favorite team, and munching on a dog and beer.  In San Diego, that means rooting for the Padres and soaking in a visit to PETCO Park.

The Padres are a hot ticket from April to October, play an entertaining brand of baseball, and are usually in the thick of things when the playoffs roll around.  Hosting division rivals like the Los Angeles Dodgers or the San Francisco Giants are entertaining and spirited games to attend.

But going to a Padres game is more than just watching some of the best players in the world.  PETCO is also a beautiful ballpark with spacious walkways, colorful historic Padre murals, and a grassy park where you can kick back and relax anytime.

Attending a game is an immersive experience that starts before you pass through the gates and head to your seat.

There are lots of public transportation options that bring you to within steps of PETCO Park.

One of the most popular ways is to navigate to a park-and-ride lot like the one in Old Town, park for free, and take the trolley service to the front gates.  Many people also opt for ridesharing services.  There is a designated ride-share loading zone at Park Boulevard & Harbor Drive.  You can also get to the Park by water when you take Flagship’s Coronado ferry.  Others prefer to drive, which is no problem since there are nearly 30,000 parking spaces within a 20-minute walk to the ballpark.

PETCO is adjacent to the Gaslamp Quarter, which is the heart of San Diego nightlife and offers a huge selection of pre-game and post-game food and drinking options.

Once inside PETCO, you have a huge range of food, beverage, and entertainment options to take in before, during, and after the game.

PETCO is also decidedly family-friendly, so it’s perfect for kids of all ages.  Concessions will tempt you with footlong bacon-wrapped hot dogs, loaded nachos, spicy fried chicken, acai bowls, sushi, BBQ brisket and pulled pork, fish tacos, clam chowder, ice cream, and of course, a wide selection of craft and draft beers, cocktails and other adult beverages.

PETCO has relaxed rules about bringing your own food, and there’s no problem if you want to pack your snacks and sandwiches.

If baseball isn’t your game, PETCO also hosts other events and concerts throughout the year, offering you a similar high-quality experience when you visit.

San Diego’s beautiful weather makes it a terrific place to play sports all year. Residents of the city certainly take advantage of that with a wide array of teams and facilities.

San Diego Sports

The city attracts athletes from across the world to play for their professional sports teams and local clubs. The love for athletics starts young in San Diego with youth teams for toddlers up to teenagers. Pee wee football is one of the most popular extracurricular activities for youngsters who live in the area, followed by baseball, soccer, lacrosse, cheerleading, and even hockey.

In addition to private leagues, the high schools and middle schools also offer sports to their students. Those teams can prepare dedicated athletes to play for one of the colleges or universities in the city, like San Diego City College or the University of San Diego

San Diego FC, a new San Diego pro sports team, will join MLS in 2025, bringing new excitement to the league.  Get ready to follow an exciting journey as San Diego FC to begin play in MLS in 2025 prepares for its debut season.

Where to Find the Right Team

Finding the right team to play for really depends on where it is located, skill level, and the athlete’s ultimate goal. For really small children, finding a recreational team is fairly easy. Parents can just go online or over to their local park, sign up for their child’s choice of sport, pay a fee, and that’s about it. For example, the San Diego Youth Aztecs, football and cheerleading programs, are in Chula Vista and often practice at Montgomery-Waller Park.

As they grow older and sports become more competitive, it is a little more difficult. The Right to Dream Academy has an MLS Next program for gifted players who would like to go pro one day. To get on the team, a player will have to try out. Opening in summer 2025.

At the high school level, where a student plays will likely depend on where they live unless they are involved with a club team outside of school. At the college level, including for San Diego State University, where someone plays will depend on whether they were recruited or if they are able to become part of a team as a walk-on.

Sports Facilities

There are multiple full-service sports complexes in San Diego that have facilities for many different sports. The Willie Henderson Sports Complex has one baseball field, one youth ball field, three multi-purpose soccer and football fields, two softball fields, and much more. The SoCal Sports Complex is a massive complex that often hosts soccer tournaments.

For athletes who are involved in BMX racing, San Diego BMX has one of the top tracks in the region. The city also has golf courses, rowing facilities, multiple cheerleading training facilities and much more.

Professional Teams

America’s Finest City has one major men’s professional team, MLB’s San Diego Padres. The city also boasts many other professional sports teams across several other sports, both at the highest level for that particular genre and minor league teams. For instance, the National Women’s Soccer League’s San Diego Wave FC and Major League Rugby San Diego Legion are both professional teams in the area.

If you’re heading to a game at Petco Park in downtown San Diego, planning your parking ahead of time will make the experience much smoother. With thousands of fans attending each game, nearby lots and garages fill quickly, especially on weekends and opening day.

Here’s a quick guide to the most convenient parking options near Petco Park in 2026.

Editor’s Take

If you go to Padres games regularly, the best strategy is to park a few blocks away and enjoy the walk through downtown. East Village and the Gaslamp Quarter are lively on game days, and walking 10 minutes can easily save you $20–$30 on parking.

Personally, I like parking slightly outside the immediate stadium area and grabbing a drink or bite nearby before heading into the ballpark. It avoids the worst post-game traffic and makes the whole experience feel more like a night out in downtown San Diego rather than just a trip to a parking garage.

Official Padres Parking Lots

The closest and most convenient parking options are the official Padres-preferred lots run by ACE Parking. These are typically the first to fill up and should be reserved online before the game when possible.

Popular options include:

  • Padres Parkade – Located on 10th Avenue near J Street, one of the closest garages to the ballpark.
  • Tailgate Padres Parking Lot – A large open lot where fans can tailgate before the game.
  • Petco Parking – Several Padres-preferred parking areas surrounding the stadium.

These official lots usually open 2–4 hours before first pitch and remain open until late evening after games end.

Typical parking prices range from about $15 to $55 depending on proximity and demand.

Nearby Parking Garages

If the official lots are full, there are many downtown garages within walking distance of the stadium.

One of the most popular options is:

  • Ace Parking – 6th & K Parkade – Located just a few blocks from Petco Park near the Gaslamp Quarter.

Another convenient garage is:

  • Park‑It‑On‑Market – Located on Market Street and within an easy walk to the ballpark.

Additional garages near the Gaslamp Quarter and Convention Center also offer game-day parking and can be reserved through parking apps.

Convention Center & Waterfront Parking

Many fans park at garages near the San Diego waterfront and walk across the pedestrian bridge to the stadium.

A common option is:

  • Hilton San Diego Convention Center Parking – Located near Harbor Drive and about a 10-minute walk to the stadium.

The San Diego Convention Center garage is also a large facility often used during Padres games.

Street Parking Near Petco Park

Street parking in downtown San Diego is limited on game days. Many meters are enforced and special event pricing may apply near the stadium. In some cases, meter rates increase during large events like Padres games.

If you’re hoping to find street parking:

  • Arrive early (before the evening rush)
  • Carefully check signage and time limits
  • Expect to walk several blocks to the stadium

Best Cheap Parking Near Petco Park

Parking right next to Petco Park can be expensive on game days, but several garages within a short walk offer more affordable options.

One of the best budget options is 6th & K Parkade, located just across the street from the stadium. This garage typically charges a flat rate of around $15 on game days, making it one of the closest inexpensive places to park.

Another popular choice is Park-It-On-Market, a six-level garage about a 10-minute walk from the stadium that also often charges around $15 during Padres games.

Additional lower-cost garages include:

  • Horton Plaza Garage – about a 10–12 minute walk
  • San Diego Convention Center Garage – large facility across Harbor Drive
  • Manchester Grand Hyatt Garage – easy walk across the pedestrian bridge

In general, official Padres parking lots closest to the stadium tend to cost $25–$55 depending on the game, while garages a few blocks away can cost significantly less.

One thing to watch for: the City of San Diego now charges special-event parking meter rates of up to $10 per hour within a half-mile of the stadium during large events like Padres games, so street parking may not be as cheap as it appears.
